Dental Bonding

Healthy Smiles Family Dentistry offers some restorative and cosmetic procedures to improve your smile and oral health. One of our most popular procedures, dental bonding, is a cheap and effective way to accomplish this goal. Dental bonding is the application of a tooth-colored resin composite material, using adhesives and curing light.

Why Choose Dental Bonding?

Most often, bonding is used for cosmetic purposes to improve a chipped or discolored tooth. our dentists may also recommend dental bonding to:

  • Repair decayed teeth as an alternative to amalgam fillings
  • To close the space between gapped teeth
  • To protect a root that has been exposed as the result of gum recession
  • To improve the appearance of a misshaped tooth
  • To make a tooth appear longer

Dental Bonding Procedure

There is little advance preparation needed for dental bonding. our dentists will use a shade guide to select the appropriate color of resin composite, one that best matches the color of your tooth. In many cases, a local anesthetic may not even be necessary, unless the bonding is being used to fill a cavity. In that case, our dentists will have to remove the decayed material and slightly reshape the enamel.

Once our dentists has chosen the appropriate shade, we can proceed with the rest of the procedure. We will have to slightly etch the surface of the tooth to improve the strength of the bonding. Next, the tooth is coated with a conditioning liquid that will help the bonding better adhere to the rough surface. When the preparation is complete, our dentists will apply resin composite, a putty-like substance that is quite malleable, to the surface of the tooth. Once we have achieved the proper shape, we will use a curing light to harden the bonding. our dentists will then trim and shape any excess material.

Once we are happy with the final shape, our dentists will polish the material to match the sheen of the rest of your tooth. Depending on your circumstance, it can take anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour to complete the procedure. If you require multiple bondings, it may take multiple appointments.

After the procedure, our dentists will give you a detailed set of instructions to help you better care for your bonding. To prevent or minimize stains, we recommend you avoid eating or drinking certain foods, especially for the first 48 hours. In the days following the procedure, you should call us if you notice any sharp edges, or have a strange feeling when you bite down.

Advantages of Dental Bonding

Healthy Smiles Family Dentistry offers dental bonding because it is the easiest and least expensive way to fix cosmetic issues. Unlike dental crowns and porcelain veneers, most bondings can be completed in one visit, and without the use of a dental laboratory. Bonded teeth also retain more enamel than those that are prepared for crowns or veneers. If you are in need of a small cosmetic change, or a correction of a tooth in an area with low bite pressure, dental bonding may be the ideal solution for you!
