How Lasers Can Help Improve Oral Health

How Lasers Can Help Improve Oral HealthLasers have been used in the field of dentistry for over two decades to treat a variety of problems. These treatments have been approved by the FDA, while they are still awaiting a Seal of Acceptance from the American Dental Association.

If you are interested in using one of these treatments, it is important to weigh the pros and cons cautiously as you make a decision.

Laser Uses in the Field of Dentistry

There are many reasons that your dentist might recommend the use of a laser treatment:

•  Gum disease treatment. Lasers can be used to remove bacteria from the gums or to reshape the gums completely. If the gums have overgrown due to certain medications, lasers can help to trim it down, and inflamed gum tissue can also be removed.
•  Crown lengthening. During this procedure, lasers can remove and reshape both bone and gum tissue.
•  Removing enamel. If the enamel needs to be removed for any reason, including preparation for veneers or composite bonding, a laser can help.
•  Tooth whitening. In-office tooth whitening services may use a laser to accelerate the effect.
•  Lip and tongue movement. Lasers can be used to remove muscle attachments that may restrict lip or tongue movement.
•  Biopsies and lesion removals. If your dentist suspects oral cancer, you may need to have a biopsy to examine the lesion. Even if the area is not cancerous, if it is painful or causes other problems, a laser can remove it to improve comfort.
•  Remove tooth decay. Lasers can also be used to remove tooth decay, and in the event that a filling is needed, the laser can prepare the surrounding enamel for receipt.
